Notebook news

from the road

Molly Osberg, Associate Executive Director of the Colorado Dental Association used Colorado Notebook in publicizing the Mission of Mercy free dental clinic project in Northern Colorado. The story, by the way, aired nationally on the CBS Evening News.

"I can't tell you what a lifesaver the Notebook was. I just had moments to contact all radio in the area to make an announcement on air and it was so easy to do since the contact info was right in front of me. I didn't have time to research and I was so grateful that I didn't have to."

Don't forget to use the Notebook database when you're on assignment or out of the office. It's available to you 24/7 when you have internet access and your password.

Use the Notebook for event invitation lists
Many of our subscribers find that the database is a great tool to help them create or supplement their invitation lists for events. You can quickly (within seconds) download lists to a spread-sheet that contains all the information you need to then print labels or create emails.  Take a look at the sub-categories in each of our eight Community Categories for ideas such as:  state legislators, the congressional delegation, state and federal government agency direct-ors, mayors, city councils, county commissioners, school districts (super-intendents), schools (admin-istrators), and foundations (executive directors).

When you need a list of schools in a particular School District
To find a list of all the schools in a particular school district, first pull up the School District subcategory and find your record. The school districts have a designated acronym or code included in the name of the district. Type that code in the "Organization" field and perform the search in the Education Category. You will pull up all the schools in that district and then you can further refine that search for elementary, middle or high schools.

Speaking of Acronyms

I've never been a fan of acronyms and in fields like education, healthcare and government, you can find them in bunches. Every so often, however, you come across one that's preferable to the mouthful it stands for.

Take BOCES, for example.

Pronounced "Bo-Sees", it stands for the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services. I bring these unique but little understood or known organizations to your attention because they are a quick and direct link to many of the schools and school districts in Colorado.

Colorado BOCES

BOCES supply educational services to two or more school districts that alone cannot afford the services or many find it cost-effective to cooperate with other school districts.  Services vary from one BOCES to another and may include such things as special education, migrant education, alternative school programs, technology support, data management, vocational education, or grant manage-ment. They also support the individual school districts in connecting with their local communities by partnering with colleges, libraries, health care professionals and others in the area.

There are 21 BOCES in Colorado and all of them can be found in the Notebook. Just go to the Education Subcategory list and click on "BOCES". You can also search for the list by simply typing the acronym in the organization field. The executive director is the primary contact for each of the BOCES and you'll find additional information about them in the record notes sections. Many have their own websites as well. You also can find additional information about them at the Colorado BOCES Association website (www.coloradoboces.org).
Environmental Writers

A subscriber has inquired about adding a new subcategory to the News Media Category of the Notebook: "Environmental Writers". Actually, it's a subcategory we've been thinking about for some time but have only been aware of a handful of writers who have the environment as a full or part-time beat. Mark Jaffe of the Denver Post, Todd Hartman, Rocky Mountain News, and Laura Snider, Boulder Camera, immediately come to mind.

We're happy to add this subcategory to the Notebook and invite you to help populate it. Send us the names of other journalists, print or broadcast, who cover the environment and we'll create a record for them.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, everyone.
